Te Kairanga Celebrates Global Success with Decanter Platinum for Estate Pinot Noir 2024

Te Kairanga Celebrates Global Success with Decanter Platinum for Estate Pinot Noir 2024

18 June 2026

Te Kairanga is delighted to announce that the Te Kairanga Estate Pinot Noir 2024 has been awarded Platinum at the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards, one of the world's most respected and influential wine competitions.

The accolade recognises the exceptional quality of the 2024 vintage and reinforces Te  Kairanga's position as one of Martinborough's leading Pinot Noir producers. Judged alongside thousands of wines from across the globe, a Platinum medal places Te Kairanga Estate Pinot  Noir 2024 among the finest wines entered in this year's competition.

The award also continues a proud history of success for Te Kairanga at the Decanter World Wine Awards. In 2019, Te Kairanga John Martin Pinot Noir 2017 achieved the competition's highest honour, being awarded Best in Show with 97 points. The latest Platinum medal demonstrates the enduring quality of Te Kairanga's Pinot Noir programme and its ability to consistently perform on the international stage
Winemaker John Kavanagh said the award reflects both an outstanding vintage and the unique character of Martinborough.

“Te Kairanga Estate Pinot Noir 2024 is an exciting and rewarding expression of the distinctive Martinborough grape-growing district and my desire to make Pinot Noir which expresses the character of the region in which we grow and live. It is a fresh and vibrant wine with a lively and energetic combination of fine fruit and classic Martinborough savoury flavours.”

The 2024 growing season provided ideal conditions for producing wines of exceptional
concentration and balance. A near-perfect vintage from a quality perspective was shaped by a smaller crop resulting from unsettled flowering conditions. A month of hot, dry weather in January established excellent fruit development, while cool, dry conditions through February and March preserved freshness and natural acidity. Dry harvest weather across March and April allowed fruit from all four vineyards that contribute to the Estate Pinot Noir blend to be harvested at optimal ripeness.

The result is a wine showcasing intense fruit expression, fine acidity, moderate alcohol levels and the distinctive savoury complexity for which Martinborough Pinot Noir is renowned.

This latest international recognition follows a remarkable run of success for Te Kairanga wines over the past year, including:

  • Trophy and Double Gold (98 points) – New Zealand International Wine Show 2025: Te Kairanga Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2025
  • Double Gold (98 points) – New Zealand International Wine Show 2025: Te Kairanga Estate Rosé 2025
  • Double Gold (98 points) – New Zealand International Wine Show 2025: Te Kairanga Runholder Pinot Noir 2024
  • Gold – National Wine Awards of Aotearoa 2025: Te Kairanga Runholder Pinot Noir
    2024
  • Gold (94 points) – New Zealand International Wine Show 2025: Te Kairanga John
    Martin Pinot Noir 2024

This most recent Platinum medal further highlights the strength and consistency of Te
Kairanga's portfolio and the exceptional quality emerging from Martinborough's vineyards.

This year’s Decanter World Wine Awards results were a powerful testament to the quality and style of the Martinborough region, with Palliser Estate’s Hua Nui Vineyard Pinot Noir 2024 and Craggy Range’s Te Muna Sauvignon Blanc 2025 also being awarded Platinum medals.

“For a region that produces less than 2% of New Zealand wine, Martinborough really punches above it weight. It’s wonderful to be recognised alongside our neighbours for that commitment to quality,” said Kavanagh.

Te Kairanga Estate Pinot Noir is in extremely short supply with a limited allocation being
released from the winery library and made available directly from Te Kairanga’s cellar door and restaurant, The Runholder, and via Foley Cellars.

All three of the Decanter Platinum medal winning wines from Martinborough will be
presented to taste by their winemakers at a special celebration event on Saturday July 4th at The Runholder.
